GPS Location Accuracy

Curious about the accuracy of Open Tee's GPS?

Updated over 3 weeks ago

At Open Tee, we aim to deliver the highest possible GPS location accuracy using the latest technology available.

Advanced GPS Technology

We leverage Assisted GPS (A-GPS)—a system that enhances standard GPS by incorporating data from mobile networks and Wi-Fi. This hybrid approach significantly improves accuracy and speed, especially in areas with strong signal availability.

Fortunately, golf courses are typically located in open, low-interference environments. This allows us to achieve better accuracy than would be possible in dense urban areas.

Real-World Performance

With a Good GPS signal, our in-app location tracking has been tested to deliver ±0.5 to ±2 yards of accuracy. Horizontal accuracy data is sourced directly from Apple’s Core Location SDK, ensuring robust integration with your iPhone’s sensors.

Understanding GPS Signal Quality in Open Tee

Your GPS signal quality directly impacts the accuracy of distances shown in the app. Open Tee categorises GPS performance into four levels:

🟢 Excellent

“Strong, precise signal. Ideal conditions—you’re good to go!”

This is the highest level of GPS accuracy. Your device has a clear line of sight to multiple satellites, with minimal interference. Expect pinpoint distance tracking.

🟢 Good

“Reliable GPS with high accuracy. Minor interference might be nearby, but nothing to worry about.”

You’re still getting great performance, though you may be close to some minor interference (e.g. trees or small structures). Most users won’t notice any drop in accuracy.

🟡 Poor

“Weak signal. You may be near interference—accuracy could be affected.”

The app is detecting degraded GPS performance. This may happen if you’re:

  • Near tall buildings or metal structures

  • Close to high-voltage power lines

  • In a valley or dip in terrain

To improve accuracy, try moving to a more open area with a clear view of the sky.

🔴 Not Available

“Location services are off or inaccessible. Please check your settings.”

Your device isn’t able to get a GPS signal. This could be due to:

  • Location permissions being disabled

  • Airplane mode or poor reception

  • Being indoors or in a shielded area

To fix this, head to: Settings → Open Tee → Location → Enable “While Using the App”

⚠️ What Can Affect GPS Accuracy?

While golf courses are generally great environments for GPS (open, flat, minimal interference), a few things can still cause issues:

  • High-voltage power lines: Can emit electromagnetic noise that disrupts GPS signals.

  • Large metal buildings or vehicles: Reflect GPS signals, making them arrive at slightly different times (called multipath interference).

  • Valleys: Block or scatter satellite signals.

  • Inside buildings or cars: GPS doesn’t penetrate well through roofs and walls.
